European IVD Market Statistics Report 2021 Released by MedTech Europe
The European IVD Market Statistics Report 2021 has just been published by MedTech Europe. The latest version of this annual report shows that revenues for IVDs increased by an unprecedented 25.4% across the EU27 member states (plus EFTA, the UK and Turkey) between 2019 and 2020. Most of this increase was due to COVID-19 related diagnostics, however there were significant increases in specific tests, and dramatic decreases in others which varied from country to country. For UK-specific data companies participating in the BIVDA Market Audit have received detailed reports by test type showing high growth of some coagulation and sepsis tests and a worrying reduction in routine screening tests and diagnostic testing for STDs for example.
European IVD Market Grows 25% in 2020
Once again the UK market, although fifth largest, lags way behind other major markets in expenditure on IVDs per capita, at approximately two-thirds of those in Germany, Belgium, Spain and France, and at 21st place behind the Czech Republic and Estonia. These statistics will not include the largely unaccounted expenditures of Covid-19 antigen tests by the UK government, however, which are mainly sourced in bulk from China, and provided free of charge (so far) to UK citizens.
