BIVDA is pleased to contribute to the ‘Week of Action’ led by the Stick to Science alliance, from 4-8 April in support of the campaign to finalise the UK’s formal association to the €95.5 billion (£79.8 billion) Horizon Europe programme. This ongoing impasse is threatening to stifle vital scientific, medical and diagnostic research efforts that underpin novel approaches to medical care, scientific and technological innovation.

Research has never been more important than right now as countries tackle the post-COVID-19 economic recovery. The Stick to Science campaign has now collected more than 5,000 signatures from 72 countries, including endorsements from more than 250 leading organisations from the world of science. BIVDA is now lending its voice to this chorus of scientific collaboration calling for the depoliticisation of science, research and innovation.

BIVDA’s own European Affairs function is aimed at bridging gaps of communication in diagnostic partnerships and supply chains linking the EU and UK IVD sectors. On behalf of our 200+ member companies, we advocate continued engagement through information sharing and regulatory alignment, despite challenges posed by Brexit. The British research community has a strong pool of talent, with the potential to add significant value to pan-European breakthroughs and innovation. However, these experts require transparency on access to funding programmes, patient trials and communication pathways.  

BIVDA Chief Executive, Doris-Ann Williams said: “Research in the sectors such as the IVD industry leads to a stimulated economy, readiness to react to public health challenges, drives job creation and makes a difference to people’s lives. Despite the Government’s much-needed assured funding for UK researchers, access to the Horizon Europe programme remains a priority for continued joint efforts in scientific research.”

Science should not be subjected to political bartering. BIVDA calls for the present deadlock to be overcome to allow for research to thrive across all borders.
