Yesterday saw the launch of the Labour Party’s manifesto ahead of the general election in three weeks’ time. While there were no great surprises in their document, we welcome the pledge to shift resources to primary and community care, including trialling Neighbourhood Health Centres, which should yield earlier diagnoses and improve patient outcomes.

Formed from the four regional Health Innovation Networks (HINs), the Health Innovation North team held its first conference in Liverpool on 6th June. Pulling together senior leaders from across the NHS, stakeholders, entrepreneurs, and patient representatives, the conference looked to champion the role of innovation in improving health outcomes.

The Health and Social Care Committee have been undertaking the Future Cancer Inquiry since March 2023, examining how to improve the treatment, diagnosis and prevention of cancer. BIVDA's Head of Regulatory Strategy, Professor Mike Messenger said "We welcome this new initiative from MHRA to adopt a 'smart' framework for reliance and recognition. This is in line with international best practice principles to increase regulatory efficiency and to ensure continued patient access to safe and effective IVDs."

The strategy will cover the period 2024-27 and includes a greater focus on antimicrobial resistance, and infectious disease, near-patient testing and pathway innovation, and genomics in cancer, infection, and both rare and common diseases. Members can still expect the maintenance of our current high levels of service and support in all areas.

The British In Vitro Diagnostic Association (BIVDA) is delighted to confirm the appointment of Helen Dent as Chief Executive, following a successful period as Interim Chief Executive. Helen will lead BIVDA in championing the medical diagnostics industry to politicians, policymakers, media and relevant stakeholders and in supporting members to improve patient outcomes.
